# Home EV Chargers in Queensland: What Changed on 1 October 2026

The 20 amp limit that slowed down home charging in Queensland has gone. Here is what that means for your home, your switchboard and your solar.

By **Hang Loose Electrical**, licensed electricians in Clontarf. Checked 13 October 2026.

## What changed

Until recently, Energex rules meant most single-phase home chargers in South East Queensland were limited to 20 amps (about 4.6 kW) unless a network control device was fitted. Energex and Ergon Energy Network announced in a stakeholder notice dated 22 September 2026 that from 1 October 2026 a single-phase charger can be installed at 32 amps (about 7.4 kW) without a network control device. Existing network-controlled chargers can stay as they are.

Your charger still has to fit within your home's supply limit, and all the other connection and safety rules still apply. Rules in this area have changed often, so your electrician should confirm the current Energex requirements when they quote.

## Which charger suits your home

- **Single-phase homes (most houses):** up to about 7.4 kW. That suits overnight charging for most drivers.
- **Three-phase homes:** chargers up to 22 kW are possible when connected across all three phases, but many cars cannot charge that fast on AC. Check your car's onboard charger rating before paying for a bigger unit.
- **A standard power point:** fine for occasional top-ups, but slow, and not designed for hours of continuous charging every night.

## Will your switchboard cope?

A home charger needs its own circuit and the right type of safety switch protection. Older boards with ceramic fuses, no safety switches or no spare room usually need work first. Our guide on [switchboards before air con, EV chargers or solar](https://www.hanglooseelectrical.com.au/switchboard-before-aircon-ev-solar) explains how to tell.

## Charging from solar

If you have solar, a charger that can follow your solar output lets you charge from your own power during the day instead of exporting it. Ask about this before you buy. Not every charger does it, and the setup matters.

## Before you buy a charger

1. Check your car's maximum AC charging rate.
2. Find out if your home is single-phase or three-phase. Your switchboard or electricity bill usually tells you.
3. Send us a photo of your switchboard and where you want the charger.
4. Decide if you want solar-matched charging.
5. Then choose the charger. We can install a charger you supply or recommend one.

## From our job sheets

We install chargers in homes, businesses and even on boats. A typical recent home job was a 7 kW charger in a garage for a Tesla Model Y, set up to work with the home's solar. On older homes, the charger install often goes hand in hand with switchboard work.

## What it costs with us

EV charger installs are quoted in writing, because the price depends on the distance from the switchboard, the board's condition and the charger you choose. See [EV charger installation](https://www.hanglooseelectrical.com.au/ev-charging).

### Can I now install a 7 kW charger without a network device?

From 1 October 2026, yes for single-phase homes, according to the Energex and Ergon notice, provided it fits within your home's supply limit. We confirm the current rules when we quote.

### I already have a network-controlled charger. Do I need to change it?

No. Existing network-controlled chargers can stay as they are.

### Is three-phase worth it for EV charging?

Only if your car can charge faster than 7.4 kW on AC and you need that speed. Many drivers charge overnight and never need more.

### Can you install a charger I bought myself?

Yes, as long as it is approved for use in Australia. Send us the model before you buy if you are unsure.
