## Which workplaces it applies to

Queensland's electrical safety regulation sets inspection, testing and tagging requirements for "specified electrical equipment" used in these kinds of work:

- Construction work (which follows AS/NZS 3012)
- Manufacturing work
- Service work
- Office work
- Amusement work
- Rural work under certain risk conditions

Specified equipment is generally plug-in equipment rated at no more than 20 amps, plus extension leads and portable outlet devices (power boards). For office and service work, it is limited to equipment that is moved during its normal use.

## How often

WorkSafe Queensland sets maximum intervals. Common ones:

- **Construction:** every 3 months for most equipment, 6 months for transportable structures and some fixed equipment
- **Manufacturing:** 6 months, or 12 months for double-insulated equipment
- **Service work** (no safety switch protection): 12 months
- **Office work** (no safety switch protection): 5 years
- **Amusement:** 6 months, or 12 months for double-insulated equipment

Your own risk assessment may call for shorter intervals, especially for tools used outdoors, in wet areas or roughly handled.

## Safety switches need testing too

Workplace safety switches have two kinds of test: a push-button test by the user, and an operating-time test with an instrument. As examples, fixed safety switches in construction work need a push-button test monthly and an operating-time test every 12 months. Fixed safety switches in office work need a push-button test every 6 months and an operating-time test every 2 years.

## Who can do it, and what the tag shows

- Testing must be done by a person the employer has appointed as competent, through training, experience or qualifications.
- Repairs to electrical equipment need an electrical work licence.
- Since the 2024 amendments, testing energised equipment is treated as energised electrical work. It needs a risk assessment and safe work method.
- Each tag must show the test date and the next test date.
- Equipment that fails must be taken out of use and tagged so nobody uses it.

## Keep it simple

1. List your equipment and which work type it falls under.
2. Set your intervals and diarise them.
3. Keep the test records with dates and results.
4. Have your fixed safety switches tested at the same visit.

## From our job sheets

We test and tag for workshops, sites, offices, tradies and boat owners. Recent jobs include testing all three-phase equipment on a site, tagging extension leads and battery chargers, and annual tagging for small businesses. We can also test your switchboard safety switches in the same visit.

## What it costs with us

Test and tag is quoted by the number of items and the site. See [test and tag](https://www.hanglooseelectrical.com.au/test-and-tag) and [commercial electrical](https://www.hanglooseelectrical.com.au/commercial).

### Do offices have to test and tag?

Office equipment that is moved during normal use and not protected by a safety switch has a maximum interval of five years. Many businesses choose shorter intervals.

### Can my own staff test and tag?

Only someone the employer has appointed as competent can do it. Repairs need a licensed electrician.

### What happens to equipment that fails?

It must be taken out of use and tagged so nobody uses it until it is repaired or thrown away.

### Do you test safety switches at the same time?

Yes. We test the switchboard safety switches in the same visit and record the results.
