What usually causes it
A safety switch (RCD) cuts the power when it detects electricity leaking to earth. That leak usually comes from a faulty appliance, moisture in an outdoor power point, light or cable, or damaged wiring.
Tripping when it rains points to water getting in somewhere outside. Tripping when a particular appliance runs points to that appliance. If it trips straight back off when you reset it, there is a fault still connected.
What you can safely check
- Turn off and unplug appliances on the affected circuit, then try resetting the safety switch.
- Plug things back in one at a time. If it trips when one goes in, that appliance is the likely cause.
- If it still trips with everything unplugged, leave it off and call us. Do not hold the switch on.
