What the 2027 rules need

By 1 January 2027, every Queensland home needs photoelectric smoke alarms that are all interconnected, so when one goes off they all go off. That includes owner-occupied houses, townhouses and units. Rentals and homes being sold already have to comply.

The alarms must be made to AS 3786-2014, either hardwired to mains power with a backup battery or powered by a non-removable 10-year battery, and replaced once they expire. If your home already has hardwired alarms, the replacements need to be hardwired too.

Where the alarms go

  • In every bedroom
  • In the hallway that connects the bedrooms to the rest of the home
  • On every storey, including storeys without bedrooms

All FAQs

Does my home need new smoke alarms by 2027?

If your alarms are not photoelectric, not interconnected, missing from any bedroom, hallway or storey, or older than 10 years, then yes. We check and tell you exactly what is needed.

Hardwired or 10-year battery alarms?

Both meet the rules. Wireless interconnected 10-year battery alarms talk to each other without new cabling. If your home already has hardwired alarms, the replacements must be hardwired, and only a licensed electrician can install those.

How much does it cost?

Smoke alarm replacement is from $89 inc GST per alarm. The total depends on how many alarms your home needs, which comes down to the number of bedrooms, hallways and storeys.

Do you give a compliance certificate?

Yes. Once the home meets the rules we can issue a smoke alarm compliance certificate.

Why does my smoke alarm keep beeping?

Usually a low battery, or an alarm at the end of its life. Expired alarms need replacing.

Is the work guaranteed?

Yes. We are licensed and insured (Queensland Electrical Contractor Licence 91200, $20 million public liability insurance), all work is done to Australian Standards (AS/NZS 3000), and our workmanship is backed by our satisfaction guarantee. We confirm the terms in your quote, and your rights under Australian Consumer Law always apply.
