Protecting your home from surges and brownouts
Power surges and brownouts are different problems that need different protection. A surge is a sudden voltage spike, often from storms or switching on the network, and it can damage TVs, computers, air conditioners and appliances in an instant. A brownout is a drop in voltage that makes motors and compressors work harder and can shorten their life.
A surge diverter on its own won't stop brownouts. We check what's happening at your property and recommend the right protection for each issue, so you don't pay for the wrong fix. Energex recommends a layered approach to surge protection.

Surge and brownout protection: common questions
Can't see your question? Call 0492 268 126 and talk to the team.
What does surge protection do?
A surge protection device at the switchboard limits voltage spikes from storms and network events before they reach your appliances. It reduces the risk of damage but cannot stop a direct lightning strike.
What is a brownout?
A brownout is a drop in voltage. Low voltage can damage motors in fridges, pumps and air conditioners. Brownout protection disconnects equipment until the voltage recovers.
Can protection be added to my existing switchboard?
Usually, if there is room on the board. If not, we explain the options, including an upgrade.
Can you check for storm damage?
Yes. We inspect, make safe and complete the report your insurer asks for.
Is the work guaranteed?
Yes. We are licensed and insured (Queensland Electrical Contractor Licence 91200, $20 million public liability insurance), all work is done to Australian Standards (AS/NZS 3000), and our workmanship is backed by our satisfaction guarantee. We confirm the terms in your quote, and your rights under Australian Consumer Law always apply.
